What is criminal law?

Criminal law is the body of law that relates to crime. It regulates social conduct and prescribes whatever is threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and moral welfare of people. It includes the punishment of people who violate these laws.

What is the source of criminal law in Turkey at the moment?

At the moment the main source is the Turkish Criminal Code which in 2004 replaced the former Criminal Code of 1926. Also we have the Law of Misdemeanours, The Code of Military Law. We have specific statutes regulating specific fields of criminal law as well as some other statutes in other fields of law containing provisions of penal cause.

What is a crime?

A criminal act is composed of three elements; the act, criminal intent or recklessness and illegality. And obviously it is an act against the law and is punishable by law. There can be no crime without law.

What are different kind of punishments?

The severest punishment is life imprisonment. In addition there are fines and alternative sanctions like voluntary work.

When is the punishment served?

The punishment is served after the decision of the judge becomes definite.
